Monthly Action - July 2025 - Climate Lobby
Take action to lobby your MP for urgent progress on climate change as part of the climate mass lobby of parliament this month.
Record temperatures
The UK, Europe and much of the world sweltered under record temperatures in June as climate change continues to intensify. Last month was the warmest June on record in England. Temperatures reached 34 degrees in St James Park in London on 1 July, and over 40 degrees in Paris. Portugal and Spain also recorded their highest ever June temperatures. Wildfires forced thousands to flee their homes in Turkey. At least two people died from the heat in Italy. A red alert for extreme heat was in place across much of France. The record June temperatures followed on from a record-breaking spring, which was the hottest ever in the UK. And this in turn comes after a decade where the last 10 years have each been the hottest since records began in 1885. On Monday 30 June António Guterres, the UN Secretary General, speaking in Spain, said: "Extreme heat is no longer a rare event – it has become the new normal." [1]
The Secretary General is indeed right. Extreme temperatures and heatwaves are one of the key indicators of global climate change. In recent years the impacts of climate change around the world have also included storms, droughts, floods, cyclones, wildfires, landslides, massive polar melting, the melting of the world’s glaciers, sea-level rise, the devastation of coral systems, mass food and fresh water shortages, ill health, huge negative economic impacts, conflicts over scarce resources, the creation of huge numbers of climate refugees, and much more. The last couple of years has seen a massive and tragic food crisis in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya; record temperatures in the UK, and much of Europe, the US, the northern hemisphere, and the world; devastating floods in Pakistan, New Zealand, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and the UK; climate storms, and much more, all as a result of global climate change. This is impacting millions of ordinary people. It is developing countries like Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Pakistan, whose greenhouse gas emissions are a fraction of those of more developed nations, that have done the least to cause climate change, but are being hit the hardest by it.
As Christians what should we do about it?
We must take action, and there is a perfect opportunity to do so this month by taking part in The Climate Coalition’s Act Now, Change Forever mass lobby of parliament. Thousands of people will be coming to London on 9 July to take part, meet with their MP, and tell them why we believe action on climate change is essential. Even if you can’t make it on the day, there are lots of other ways to be involved.
As Christians we are all called to take part in events like this as part of caring for God’s amazing creation. Creation belongs to God, not us, and he cares for it and loves it, as it says in the Psalms, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24: 1). We therefore need to urgently get out of fossil fuels, which are driving global climate change, and instead shift to 100% clean renewable energy, which does not lead to climate change, and is cheaper as well. Arise’s 4 Shifts Campaign calls for a rewiring of our global economy to be green and fair, so it still creates the jobs and wealth that lift people out of poverty, but does so without relying on fossil fuels and the overconsumption which is wrecking our planet.
Will you take action as part of Arise’s 4 Shifts campaign this month and get involved with the Act Now, Change Forever mass lobby of parliament?

Pray
Pray for people in the UK and around the world who are being impacted by climate change heatwaves. Pray for everyone to stay cool, hydrated and safe. Pray for emergency services as they deal with those suffering heatstroke. Pray for really good attendance at the mass lobby. Pray that the message will be heard and that the UK government, and other governments around the world, will rapidly scale up action to shift the economy out of fossil fuels and into 100% clean renewable energy.
Give
As well as our MPs taking action on climate change, considering giving to Christian organisations like A Rocha or to secular groups like Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, the World Wildlife Fund, and your local Wildlife Trust who are doing great work caring for the environment.
Practical Action
Reduce your own energy use by using cars less, and walking, cycling or using public transport more. If you fly, consider reducing or ending entirely the number of flights you take, and holidaying at home, not abroad.
Ethical Consumption
Help to tackle climate change by reducing the waste from our homes as much as possible. Make a note of every item you put in your bin, then search online to see if there is a recyclable, re-usable, non-waste alternative. This should include composting all organic waste.
